It’s that time of the year again, the dreaded flu season. Dun, dun, dun! Never fear, there are many ways to help prevent and alleviate the symptoms of the flu, should you contract it. There are some simple ways to help your body remain balanced and steer clear of the flu. Self care is so important. We all know that proper self care can be the best preventative health care. People become sick from various combined factors that weaken the immune system. If you come down with the flu, there are many homeopathic remedies to help ease your discomfort and have you back to yourself in no time. So, lets talk prevention and then I will have a list of remedies to help support you and also ease discomfort if you should get sick.
First, we need to focus on what we put into our bodies. Maintaining a healthy well balanced diet with whole food (AKA real food, not processed food) fruits, veggies and healthy meats, helps supply our bodies with the necessary fuel to stay healthy. Avoid eating sugar. Sugar is a powerful immune suppressor. If we are packing in the sugar and the processed unhealthy foods, we will end up unbalanced, bogged down and get sick.
Second, we need to get the adequate amount of rest. In a nut shell, we need to log off, disconnect from our chaotic lives. I am guilty of the non-stop work ethic. You know, when we cannot go to bed without our cell phones on.Log off and BE PRESENT in the moment. If we are always tuned in and unable to relax our minds, we do not get enough sleep. NO refreshing sleep = immune suppression. I suggest shutting your phone down at least an hour before bed and trying to practice some relaxation techniques to help promote a restful sleep.
Research has shown there is a direct link to sleep and our immune system. Sleep deprivation weakens the immune system. Once the immune system is weakened, that creates a cascade of events that allows germs and viruses to sneak in and make us sick. Adults need at least 7-8 hours of sleep. Children need 9-11 hours of sleep. PLEASE-unplug, rest, reboot your bodies.
We need to have healthy coping skills. We are always under a lot of emotional stress. In homeopathy, emotional stress and trauma are directly linked to disruption in the body’s vital force (vital energy). Stress is toxic to the immune system. Often we think why am I so sick all the time?? When you find yourself run down and feeling sick, take a step back and evaluate your life and your interactions. If you have someone toxic in your life causing you unwanted stress, try to set firm boundaries and lower that stress in your life. If you incorporate healthy coping mechanisms into your daily life, you will have an outlet for stress. Having some routine activity like yoga, walking, exercise, or meditation will help you handle the daily stresses of life and maintain a healthy immune system.
Lastly, there are homeopathic remedies made for the flu season. Isn’t that awesome??!! Homeopathic pharmacies make a remedy called Influenzinum. Influenzinum homeopathic remedy is made every year for the newest flu strain. This remedy can be purchased at many online homeopathic pharmacies and it can be taken as preventative and also during an acute illness with the flu. I suggest taking Influenzinum 9c once a week at the beginning of October and continue once a week for 4 weeks. This helps support the body and help it build resistance to the flu during the flu season. Influenzinum can also be taken if you have already become infected with the flu. I recommend 30c for when you have symptoms of the flu.
There are also a number of homeopathic remedies that help for a variety of symptoms that present during flu season.
Oscillococcinum is a homeopathic remedy readily available at most local pharmacies and also sold at Walmart. Oscillococcinum is to be taken at the onset of flu-like symptoms including headache, body ache, chills, and fever. Start taking it at the onset of symptoms. You can dissolve a few grains in 2 ounces of water and sip it over several hours. Clinical studies have shown that it reduces the severity and the length of flu-like symptoms.
Belladonna- high fever, heat, headache, tired, dull, glassy eyes, lethargic, red flushed face
Gelsemium-aches, chills, not very thirsty, wants to be covered, moaning from aches, suggish, tired, lethargic, heavy droopy eyelids, exhausted
Arsenicum Album- flu’s that come on as digestive upset, wake in night to vomit or have diarrhea, if the first symptom is vomit give this remedy. Anxious, chills, thirsty for small amount of water
Pulsatilla- clear or thick yellow mucous, eyes may have yellow discharge too, clingy and may want carried or rocked, warm, thirstless, whine, cry easily, and don’t want to be alone
Bryonia-headache and belly aches worse upon movement, want to lay down and be still, movement worsens symptoms, want fresh air, worse in warm room, irritable, congested and dry cough
Kali-bichromicum-thick and green nasal discharge or phlem, moist and loose cough, wake in night from sinus pain and pressure cough and congestion.
Euphatorum perfoliatum- severe aching bone pain in the arms, legs, shoulders, back, hips and shins. Pains come on suddenly, rapidly. Bones feel broken or dislocated. Restless always moving to try to ease the pain in the bones.
